Let's Talk About Modesty

If you go out in public or turn on your TV for more than 2 minutes, you will likely see portions of skin that were once viewed as pornographic by the American culture.  Now days, there isn’t much that is held back from the general public’s eye.

Men struggle with the temptation to stare at a woman who is revealing too much.  This is the temptation to lust, and Jesus said that “anyone who looks at a woman lustfully” has committed adultery with her “in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28)  This temptation can be conquered through God’s power.  In Job 31, it says:  “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl.”  Our men can make that same covenant with their eyes, with God, and with us.  But in the meantime, what are we doing to help our brothers in Christ as they struggle?  Since we now know that this is an issue for all men, shouldn’t we do what we can to help them through it?

Proverbs 6:25 warns men “Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.”  The woman that this verse is talking about was a prostitute.  Unfortunately, many women today dress in a way that would invite men to “lust” in their hearts after her beauty.  I invite you to look through the other links in this topic, and in particular the Modesty Test page.  My prayer is that you will be enlightened and that we women will no longer be a temptation to any man but our husband!

I have not read this book yet, but it is on my list. Right after it was published, my husband and I got to go hear Brian McLaren speak at a church in Portland. We loved the stuff he was talking about--challenging!!  I recommend this book solely based on how impressed I was with his subject matter & his speaking.
