Large Families

"The Bible calls debt a curse and children a blessing. But in our culture we apply for a curse and reject blessings. Something is wrong with this picture." -Doug Phillips

I shared these thoughts with Parenting magazine when they were hosting an online poll: "Can Families Have Too Many Kids?"  I got an e-mail asking for permission to quote my thoughts in their magazine, and I agreed, and my thoughts were posted in their July magazine!

Here is what I said:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, children are a blessing, not a burden.  Kids who are raised in large families tend to be less selfish, they understand how to work well with others, and they end up being incredibly decent people.  Isn't that what the world needs?  More decent people!
When we become a mom, it is our first opportunity in life to REALLY sacrifice ourselves for another being--and if we give into this, our kids will turn out to be AWESOME!  They will learn to make sacrifices for others.  Moms with lots of kids tend to learn (by necessity) to give their all to their kids (and this is not a bad thing) and therefore the kids learn to look outside of themselves and their own desires to find true happiness by serving others.  Another thing, kids in large families don't tend to occupy themselves with lots of toys (and therefore they do not learn to become over-spending consumers who need things to be happy), but they tend to focus their time on people--what a valuable lesson to learn early on!!
I love this quote by Pamela Spurling:
"Getting "fixed" is a misnomer... if it is/was working,  then breaking it is not "fixing" it..." (www.aChristianHome.com
I have also heard it said that:
"Children are not expensive, lifestyles are."  Think about it. :)
This is the coolest resource! It's a chart of behaviors, and Scripture references to go along with each behavior.
This is one of the best parenting books out there. I highly recommend this one.
