I've been making food for Ruby lately, and I wanted
to calculate if it's actually cheaper to make it at
home than it is to buy it. The first time I
calculated it, I didn't buy the peaches on sale, and
it ended up being more expensive than buying it.
This last week, I bought what I could on sale. Here
is what I found ("The Savings" will probably be most
important to y'all):
I bought plums for $1.99 per lb, Peaches for
$1.99 per lb, and Butternut Squash for .69/lb.
- .46 per half cup of plums .11/oz
- .63 per half cup of peaches .16/oz
- .23 per half cup of butternut squash .06/oz
Buying Baby Food:
- 1.05 per 2 pack of 2.5 oz Gerber Plums,
.21/oz
- .44 per 2.5 oz of Beech Nut Peaches, .18/oz
- 1.05 per 2 pack of 2.5 oz Gerber Peaches
.21/oz
- .49 per 4 oz of Beech Nut Butternut Squash,
.12/oz
- 1.05 per 2 pack of 2.5 oz Gerber Squash,
.21/oz
The Savings:
- If your baby had 2.5 oz of plums every
morning for a month, you’d save $7.50 making
your own.
- If your baby had 2.5 oz of peaches every
morning for a month, you’d save $1.20 to $3.90
making your own.
- If your baby had 2.5 oz of butternut squash
every evening for a month, you’d save $10.20 to
$11.40 making your own.
I know for sure that bananas are never worth
buying in jars--they are so incredibly easy to mash
up and SO much cheaper (though I don't have figures
to prove it) than buying it. Carrots, I'm sure, are
cheaper homemade, and sweet potatoes as well. If I
ever see a better deal on peaches (cheaper than
1.99/lb), I will certainly buy a ton to make baby
food & freeze it!
